Domestic Violence on the Rise in Oklahoma…good thing we spend all that money on keeping shelters across the state open! …..Oh wait…
An Oklahoma Daily article discussing a sexual assault incident decides that victim blaming is more important than just letting people know to NOT RAPE:
OUPD advises students to take precautions to avoid incidents like these.
“Trust your instincts,” Chan said. “Those would be my parting words.”
Being alert and aware of your environment can help you avoid finding yourself in an uncomfortable situation.
If you do find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, be assertive about what you want or leave.
The language in the article is just one of the reasons cases of sexual assault go widely reported on college campuses. One should “trust their instincts”? How about “hey assholes, stop sexually assaulting people and oh have you heard of this thing called CONSENT?”

In a sign that—perhaps, maybe—the extreme right’s extremist attacks on the rights and health of women and children may have some limits, the Oklahoma legislature today allowed a bill to die in committee which, if passed, would have denied food vouchers and nutrition services to prenatal and pediatric clients served by Planned Parenthood of Tulsa County.

Join the women, men and families of Oklahoma at the Capitol for one very special hour to hear speakers, music, and - most importantly – to STAND UP AGAINST THE LEGISLATURE’S WAR ON WOMEN!!!!!
Our state legislature has waged a war against Oklahoma women by -
*Debating discontinuation of affirmative action (SB 837), including racist and sexist remarks from Rep. Sally Kern declaring “women usually don’t want to work as hard as a man,” and that she “saw a lot of people of color who didn’t want to work as hard”.
*Passing an amendment in SB 709 which would defund nine independent Women Infant and Children’s (WIC) health programs including Planned Parenthood of Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma. The bill is headed to a conference committee and is likely to include language which would impact only Planned Parenthood of Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma’s (PPAEO) WIC program.
*Obsessing over women’s reproductive rights in seventeen outrageous bills and passing three – making laws that: ban abortion during the second trimester of pregnancy regardless of an individual women’s circumstances and health needs (HB 1888); force women seeking medication abortions to take three times more medication and bars them from having medications alone (HB 1970); and make it impossible for insurers to offer insurance coverage for abortion in the cases of rape and incest unless the woman bought a separate policy just for abortion before the crime occurred (SB 547).
*Refusing to hear three positive prevention bills to lower the rate of unintended pregnancy in Oklahoma by: requiring age-appropriate and medically accurate sex education be taught in schools; ensuring pharmacies dispense contraceptive drugs and devices despite their beliefs; and requiring information concerning emergency contraception be available in all emergency rooms for rape victims.
A great event to attend if you have the privilege of being able to transport yourself to the state capitol, take time off work/school, and like speaking out at the legislative level. There will be speakers and like minded individuals there. Wish we could attend but a) currently out of town and b) one of the groups sponsoring has continually made ageist remarks against young activists! I know right? Anyway don’t let that discourage you if you’re able to go, who knows maybe the wonderful people from OK4RJ will show up and drop some truth about reproductive justice vs. reproductive rights.

5. Oklahoma. Oklahoma legislators looked at how Indiana Republicans are using the specter of abortion to cut off contraception and thinking of ways they can expand on that for brand-new ways to punish women for having working uteruses. Why stop at attacking women not giving birth, when you have women who have babies to punish, as well? With this in mind, the Oklahoma House passed a bill that would eliminate independent contractors from administering Women, Infants and Children (WIC), a federal program that distributes nutrition vouchers to low-income women with children. As usual, Planned Parenthood was cited as the reason, with the GOP claiming the organization is so evil that it’s better to starve babies than allow Planned Parenthood to receive government funding. In practice, the result is one more punishment inflicted on women, this time for having the nerve to have babies who need to eat.
I hope that lawmakers don’t take the 5th position ranking as a sign that they need to be more hateful and terrible in order to make Oklahoma #1. The article is very worth a read in order to bring you up to the tragic state of the American government’s war on women.
Despite the complete support of her colleagues and direct superiors within Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s English, humanities and language department, Rachel Tudor, a professor of American and Native American literature, modernity and theory, humanities, composition and philosophy, has been denied tenure and informed that her employment will be terminated as of the end of this spring semester.
According to Claire Potter, a professor of American studies and history at Wesleyan University, Tudor has an amazing record as a scholar, teacher and colleague at the university and has been highly recommended by the tenure review committee. However, the dean and vice president of academic affairs deem Tudor’s “lifestyle” inappropriate, so they have taken actions to make sure Tudor leaves.
Argh, just. What.
Sounds like BS to me. And I don’t mean “Bachelor of Science.”
FWIW, here’s how you can let SEOSU know how you feel about this discrimination:

OK legislator in regards to HB 1615 which moves the date of the primary to June and changes the petition deadline for new parties from May 1 to March, 1, disregards 15 court precedents and disrupts the right to free and equal elections.
Though this quote pertains to a bill regarding elections, I feel that the attitude is pervasive among Oklahoma legislators in regards to many other laws passed.
According to a petition in support of Tudor, the professor has been approved for tenure twice in the last two years by the Faculty Appeals Committee, but the administration re-wrote the Academic Policies and Procedures manual to prevent Tudor from obtaining tenure.
Had heard about this in the previous week, but glad it is getting national attention. Although transphobia is a major issue around the country, only here is it blatantly enforced by a state entity.

CLASSIC “I KNOW PEOPLE OF COLOR SO OBVIOUSLY I’M NOT A RACIST” RESPONSE. Though I don’t know Representative Kern’s “true spirit” her action in voting for the proposed constitutional amendment was in fact a racist one.

inconstantcontradiction asked: "The problem with sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, classist, ableist, etc., remarks and “jokes” is not that they’re offensive, but that by relying for their meaning on harmful cultural narratives about privileged and marginalized groups they reinforce those narratives, and the stronger those narratives are, the stronger the implicit biases with which people are indoctrinated are. That’s real harm, not just “offense."
