Join the Pink Wave

Join the women, men and families of Oklahoma at the Capitol for one very special hour to hear speakers, music, and - most importantly – to STAND UP AGAINST THE LEGISLATURE’S WAR ON WOMEN!!!!!

Our state legislature has waged a war against Oklahoma women by -

*Debating discontinuation of affirmative action (SB 837), including racist and sexist remarks from Rep. Sally Kern declaring “women usually don’t want to work as hard as a man,” and that she “saw a lot of people of color who didn’t want to work as hard”.

*Passing an amendment in SB 709 which would defund nine independent Women Infant and Children’s (WIC) health programs including Planned Parenthood of Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma. The bill is headed to a conference committee and is likely to include language which would impact only Planned Parenthood of Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma’s (PPAEO) WIC program.

*Obsessing over women’s reproductive rights in seventeen outrageous bills and passing three – making laws that: ban abortion during the second trimester of pregnancy regardless of an individual women’s circumstances and health needs (HB 1888); force women seeking medication abortions to take three times more medication and bars them from having medications alone (HB 1970); and make it impossible for insurers to offer insurance coverage for abortion in the cases of rape and incest unless the woman bought a separate policy just for abortion before the crime occurred (SB 547).

*Refusing to hear three positive prevention bills to lower the rate of unintended pregnancy in Oklahoma by: requiring age-appropriate and medically accurate sex education be taught in schools; ensuring pharmacies dispense contraceptive drugs and devices despite their beliefs; and requiring information concerning emergency contraception be available in all emergency rooms for rape victims.

A great event to attend if you have the privilege of being able to transport yourself to the state capitol, take time off work/school, and like speaking out at the legislative level. There will be speakers and like minded individuals there. Wish we could attend but a) currently out of town and b) one of the groups sponsoring has continually made ageist remarks against young activists! I know right? Anyway don’t let that discourage you if you’re able to go, who knows maybe the wonderful people from OK4RJ will show up and drop some truth about reproductive justice vs. reproductive rights.

*Clicking on the link will take you to the facebook event page with more info regarding the event*

New Oklahoma Bills Aim to Restrict or Ban Abortion

The proposed legislation would define life as beginning at conception, require stricter operating standards for abortion clinics and ban all research involving human embryos.

Health and legal advocates opposed to the legislation say the bills are essentially attempts to ban abortion and shut down clinics that provide the procedure, even though the clinics also provide other vital health services such as cancer screenings.

Those who support the bills say they are necessary to protect human life and are supported by a majority of Oklahomans. -Tulsa World

11 days into the legislative session and already there are 5 anti abortion bills out of committee….
