Today in rape culture, OK ed.

An Oklahoma Daily article discussing a sexual assault incident decides that victim blaming is more important than just letting people know to NOT RAPE:

OUPD advises students to take precautions to avoid incidents like these.

“Trust your instincts,” Chan said. “Those would be my parting words.”

Being alert and aware of your environment can help you avoid finding yourself in an uncomfortable situation.

If you do find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, be assertive about what you want or leave.

The language in the article is just one of the reasons cases of sexual assault go widely reported on college campuses. One should “trust their instincts”? How about “hey assholes, stop sexually assaulting people and oh have you heard of this thing called CONSENT?”

OU Sexual Assault Policy Protest

This is set to happen tomorrow Wed. April 13th

If you are worried about the fact that the University has a 30 day statute of limitations for victims of sexual assault to pursue charges against their perpetrator after they report it, please come out to this event.

We will be there all day, so you can come and go if you need to (for class or other obligations).

Please share this with your friends. The more people we can get, the better.

If you are a student or community member of Norman, please click on the link to find where and when!

Representative Acts Inappropriately

A letter to the editor of the OU school newspaper by a professor of the Women and Gender Studies department calling out Oklahoma Rep. Aaron Stiles for his irrational behavior towards students. The gist of the situation is that upon exiting a WGS event with activist Shelby Knox titled “Why Women’s History Matters” students and other stood in the hallway after the event talking away. Next door a banquet for a crisis pregnancy center named Eden Clinic was being held, this event let out into the hallway where students, faculty and others were standing around discussing. The scheduling of both these events was coincidental, but Rep. Aaron Stiles took it upon himself to threaten the “protesters” he saw. The letter recounts this in greater detail, but basically he misrepresented himself as “house security” had said the “cops are on their way” and professed to have authored the University of Oklahoma Student Code.

This erratic behavior is not without precedent. Stories of his outbursts and strange antics include telling a woman she was going to hell for not voting for him, and threatening to close a Norman mexican restaurant for endorsing an opposing candidate with a sign. Allegedly he said that “he owned this town” and promised to get all the employees of the restaurant deported.

A look at his website unsurprisingly reveals a pro life and anti gay stance:

AbortionI believe government’s duty is to preserve the life, liberty and property of its citizens; therefore, I believe we should protect the life of babies while they are still in the womb. Marriage

Simply put, I believe marriage is between a man and a woman.

It is probably a safe bet to say that Aaron Stiles hates Oklahoma women, or at least the idea of them being able to make their own choices regarding their reproductive rights.
